222AI: Shimmer and Shine
(Angelina and Glitter)

Go to Printable version of Supply List for Shimmer & Shine (opens in new tab)

Teacher: Trish Stuart
Class Length: AM
Skill Level: All

Love the look of Angelina but don’t have a clue what to do with it? Have you ever tried the Microfine Glitter as an accent? We will be using water soluble stabilizer and thread as we create ferns for this underwater scene. We will mix Angelina with some Roving and then use Ultrafine glitter to mimic beadwork. Create depth and add accents and shimmer to your fabric with the sparkle of Angelina and Glitter.

UnderSea Project

As you can see from the model we will be sewing Angelina mixed with Roving and hand dyed lace to hand dyed, embossed, heavyweight paper. The closeup shows the fern you will make as you learn to create your own lacey ferns.

Supplies:

  • BSS
  • free motion foot
  • Aqua Thread (preferably polyester embroidery thread)
  • a prewound bobbin in the same thread
  • machine embroidery hoop (This is critical! You can use a spring hoop if you cannot find a wooden hoop. 7" is the best size. Machine Emb Hoops are thinner than hand emb hoops to make them easier to slide under your presser foot)
  • pen or blue water soluble marking pen
  • Your choice of ultrafine glitter (you will not need much) and a glue that dries clear
  • topstitching needles (size 90/14)
  • embroidery needles (size 75/11 or 70/10)
  • Free motion foot

Kit fee $7 (required) includes

  • hand dyed embossed paper background
  • a variety of hand dyed laces
  • Roving
  • Angelina
  • Instructions/Pattern

An assortment of Tsukineko Inks, Fabrico Pens, and assorted tools will be available for purchase in class.

322PM: Watercolor Flowers

The soft, romantic look of watercolor is especially pretty when you have control over where the colors go. You’ll use stamp pad refill ink that is created especially for use on fabric so it is thicker, providing you with more control. Once heat set, the image is permanent. The soft drape of your fabric is maintained and you create an image of beautiful watercolor flowers in a vase that can be used alone or as a center on a future quilt.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: If you wish to prepare before class to allow more time for coloring, you may lightly trace the Hyacinth Vase image to the right side of a fat quarter of high thread count 100% cotton. The fabric should be created with long staple threads (which means the fabric will not be fuzzy) and be a close, rather than open weave. A medium to light value is best. I prefer to use a blotchy, low contrast Batik as it seems to fit all of the requirements. You do not need to wash the fabric prior to class.

Supplies:

  • BMS
  • QuiltArt: Coloring your Quilt book
  • Freezer paper for a work area
  • Flat watercolor shader brush, size 5 or 6
  • Travel package wet wipes
  • 7-8 paper towels
  • Container for water
  • Spray/mist bottle
  • Combo set of Fantastix (includes 3ea bullet & brush tips)
  • Fat quarter of a medium to pale 100% cotton with a soft blotch or blur to it (I prefer to use batik as the fabric is a high thread
    count).
  • Painters grade masking tape (the blue one)
  • book Quilt Art: Coloring Your Quilts (Hyacinth Vase Image will be done)
  • soft lead pencil (I use a mechanical pencil)
  • small paper plate
  • iron & pad

Kit fee (required) $8 includes:

provides the use of instructor’s refill ink supplies and Fabrico dual tip marker pens.

An assortment of Fabrico pens, Fantastix, and other ink supplies will be available for purchase in class.

422AM: Surface Design with
Stamp Pad Ink and Foil

Learn some simple but beautiful effects that can be achieved with foil used in conjunction with stencils, stamps and rubbings. You will use a stamp pad that was created for use with fabric so your color is permanent once heat set. Once you have created a collage base with the ink, you’ll learn how to apply foil for a soft, sophisticated look.

Project for foil and ink

Supplies needed:

  • BMS
  • Stamp ( I recommend at least one that is a texture that you can use as a background and one that can be used as a border or for leaves and flowers, maybe a geometric shape, something you like)
  • Stencil (again, something you like)
  • Stencil brush (optional but helpful)
  • 1 1/2" - 2" wide craft foam brush
  • small paper plate
  • wet wipes and paper towels
  • small spray bottle for misting
  • Sweeper or Smudgee (optional)
  • iron and pad
  • VersaCraft Stamp pads in colors of your choice. If
you are not sure about color (you really only need
two colors) I recommend the 12 color Chiffon and
the 12 color Velvet stamp pads as they allow you
to have a variety of colors at a reasonable price.

Supplies continued:

  • Finger daubers for your stamp pads (you will need one for each color if you want the colors to be clear, not mixed).
  • 2-3 makeup sponge wedges
  • Foil, in colors you like
  • Foil adhesive - I’ll have foil and adhesive available in class for purchase
  • Fat Quarter Base Fabric. I use Hoffman Batik PFD
white and will have some available in class. I
recommend either that or using a batik that has a
light color with a soft blotch to it.
  • 4” or 5” strip of a very dark fabric, cut selvedge to
    selvedge.
  • Freezer paper for a work area (about 18” x 22”)
  • Container for water
  • 2-3 sheets approx 12" long of parchment paper

Kit fee (required) $7 includes:

  • pattern and handouts
  • I will be bringing a small number of stamp pads that you can use/try in class. I recommend bringing stamp pads of your choice, though, so you are not waiting for items to become available. I will also bring my foil to share. Again, I recommend bringing foil and adhesive. I will have some available in class for purchase if you can't find what you like in town.

Teacher: Trish Stuart
Class Length: PM
Skill Level: All
Learn creative and fun ways to use fabric inks to correct or alter colors on fabrics you own that are not quite right for your current project. Use shaving cream with the inks to produce your own piece of marbled fabric and go home having used a simple method to compose your own swatch of batik. You will create some small projects in class that you can use in future artistic endeavors. Fabric inks can be used just as you would dyes, but there is no mess! Non-toxic and water soluble, these inks are permanent once set with heat and your fabric feels the same as it did before you colored it!
